WINS conflicting with DHCP

My Win2K machine is unable to get an DHCP assigned IP address on boot up.

I seem to have traced the problem to a conflict with WINS. If WINS is activated then I cannot get an IP address on boot up. If I de-activate it then I can. This seems odd to me as I can't see how WINS would conflict with the DHCP server.
It is however possible to get an IP address by renewing the connection through the Command Prompt.

This issue has come to light because we are currently in the process of installing a new Linux based domain/file serverrunning Samba. This is the WINS server but the DHCP server is running on a different machine. Does WINS and DHCP need to be the same server?

No WINS and DHCP do not need to be on the same server? As for you renewing on the command line have you tried ipconfig /renew? As for not getting an IP Address have you looked in the event viewer to determine if a cause is logged?

That's what I thought. I am still confused though as to why there is a conflict. Wouldn't the first thing a network connection do be look for an IP address if one isn't already assigned, and then go on to get DNS and/or WINS? In that case why is WINS affecting DHCP, am I missing something here?

ipconfig /renew does give me an ip address from the DHCP pool straight away. That is what I meant in my first post. It works but just not on boot up.

If the DHCP server hands out the WINS address then that order is correct. How is your client learning the WINS address?

The WINS address is specified manually, it is not assigned by DHCP. Should it be?

If it is assigned by the DHCP server you would not have to configure each and every client. Try setting the WINS server via DHCP and see if this resolves the conflict.
