Wireless LAN: laptop link to cable modem?? how??

Hi,

Right Im completely new to this wireless networking stuff so please bear with me if this is a simple question, but i can't find an answer...

I have a PC connected to a cable modem from NTL, Im selling my PC and replacing it with a sony VAIO laptop with wireless LAN capabilties.

So i will only have a laptop and a cable modem, but i want the cable modem to speak to my laptop via wireless, is there a piece of kit i just connect to my modem or do i need the modem to be linked up to a desktop pc that has wireless capabilities?

Please can someone explain this to me and suggest a product that will do this, cheers, Alex.

Basically all you need is a wireless router to connect to the cable modem. This will create a wireless LAN for you. Then it's the question of setting it up, but we can figure that one out for you if you have problems after you bought it.

Just check what speed your VAIO can communicate at, so you don't find yourself with a 11Mb router for a 54Mb pc-card.

Fantastic cheers mate,

well the spec for my laptop says:

wireles lan 802.11 b/g

if that helps figure out the speed of it, the model for the laptop is: vgn-a117s

so can you recommend any router and maybe give me an idea of what kind of price i'll have to pay?

so the router does not connect to a pc it just connects to the modem?

cheers,

Alex.

This means you can enjoy a nice 54Mb connection on your wireless network.

Well, I looked around a bit. Basically any 802.11g router will do the trick for you. I have had great success with netgear and D-link routers myself. They seem to pack a lot of performance at reasonable prices. Prices in £ seem to start at about £65 up to around £100. This is just one example (http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?rb=1901478026&action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3&product_uid=52450), any internet shopping site or your local computer store will be able to get you a good product to help you get going.

It just needs to connect straight to the modem. Nice, isn't it?

Just make sure that you get yourself a wireless router, and not one that is a combined router and cable modem...
