wireless network devices

Is a wireless Access Point Hub used as the same thing as a Wireless Access Point+Cable/DSL Router device or is an Access Point device itself used only for distance expansion of a wireless network?
I'm currently using a wired router in my 3 pc home network all in the same room. I'm going to buy a new destop pc and a new notebook pc to use in other rooms. I know I'll need wireless network cards in the new notebook and desktop pc's. Do I need to buy a Wireless Access Point+Cable/DSL Router or just a Wireless Access Point device by itself for wireless comminication? OR will the Wireless Access Point work with the wired router I already have?
Thanks, Jim

At the moment you have a router which does everything you want for connecting your 3 wired PCs.

In order to allow wireless connections, you need only buy a wireless access point. You would plug the wireless access point into a free port on the back of the router, so that any wireless computers would be able to access the Internet and other wired computers.

You don't need to buy a wireless access point + router device, because you already have your router. You could buy a wireless access point + router, which would probably allow you to connect your wired PCs to, but there is no point since you already have your router.

HTH,

Edwin
