Wirless networking help
Alright, im a beginner here. I have a dell and HP both new, and both have XP home edition. We have SBC Yahoo Dsl and thats hooked up to the dell. Now that i have the new HP i bought a linksys wirless G router, and a card to go with it. Everytihngs installed alright. The dell is flawless, as for the HP its very irritating. The HP gets reception in the other room, and sometimes allowes me online. But the signal keeps swapping and connecting to a full signal @ 11mbps which doesnt allow me to use the internet. I think the problem is my IP adress, it keeps on dropping. I cant get it back, it seems to have a mind of its own and i try entering the ip address it gives me when it works. Well nothing happens. Im pissed i spent a grand on stuff, and its not workin. Any input could help, thanks guys.

First things first - when you bought the router did you plug the DSL connection into that, or are you still using your Dell computer as the Internet sharing computer. If you still using your computer, make sure you disable the DHCP server on the router, through the web admin interface. Also, if you are not using the router for the Internet, make sure that it is not using the IP address 192.168.0.1. Change it to something else, like 192.168.0.100
Next thing, make sure that any firewall software (including ZoneAlarm and Windows XP's Internet Connection Firewall) is disabled. Then, assign static Ip addresses to each computer. On the Dell computer (the one that has the Internet connection) open up Network Connections and right-click your local network connection (not the broadband one). Select Properties and double click Internet Protocol TCP/IP. Enter the Ip address 192.168.0.1, subnet mask 255.255.255.0 and leave the default gateway blank. On your second HP computer, again open up the Internet Protocol TCP/IP settings. Set the Ip address to 192.168.0.2, the subnet mask to 255.255.255.0 and the default gateway to 192.168.0.1 Then, check that you can ping from each computer. Click Start, Run and type "cmd". In the command prompt type "ping 192.168.0.x" (without the quotes and replacing the x with a 1, then a 2). Do this from both computers and check that you get replies both times. Once this is all setup, your connection should be OK! |
