WLAN Ad-hoc problems

Hi,
Im trying to establish a wireless adhoc network of 2 computers (desktop with DLink Air Plus DWL 520+ and notebook with Intel Pro/Wireless 2200BG) and so far had many problems with it.
First of all it doesnt work, but during 'my fight' the definition of 'doesnt work' varied.
At first my desktop could see the notebook but I couldnt open it shares ("you might not have permission"). My notebook could see... itself and nothing else. Same user accounts and passes, simple sharing turned off.
Than after some time of effectless googling for the answer (there is plenty of them but non good for me) i thought it would be a good idea to update dlink dwl 520+ drivers. So I did and now niether desktop nor notebook can see each other in "my network places" and whats more when open my-workgroup i get an error "worgroup is not accessible. you might not have permission to use this network resource". I cant ping any computer (timed out).
Ive been seeking for the answer for two nightes now (god, sleepy me...) but couldnt find it... Please help me, im desperate.

Firstly, give each computer a good IP address on the same subnet (such as 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2). Make sure that the subnet mask is set to 255.255.255.0. Check to make sure that firewalls are disabled (such as ZoneAlarm and Internet Connection Firewall) then you should be able to ping between them.

Post how I got wireless XP Home networking to work...

I just finished doing battle with a couple of WinXP Home computers and a wireless DSL router. I eventually got it working, but it wasn't obvious. I've written up my experiences, which I hope are helpful to you. They're too long to post here, so see http://www3.primushost.com/~ckollars/networkingxp.html.
