XP/Apache installed...working...sort of: uploading remotely

Hi Everyone, I've been able to get an installer package of Apache/PHP/mySQL running on an XP Pro computer, but now I'm here at work, and would like to upload something. However, I can't even use Cute FTP, and though I can ftp: in through IE, I can't upload anything. When I check folder properties (which is where, when hosted elsewhere, I always just CHMODed to 777 - Linux, obviously), when I check a folder or a file's properties, I am told the folder/file can't be modified for permissions.

Any idea what I have to set up here to finish my installation?

Thanks Everyone,

Shawn

Make sure you haven't got "Use simple file sharing" enabled (check in Tools, Folder Options, View in My Computer), then right-click the file and you should see a security tab where you can modify access permissions.

Hi Edwin, thanks very much. I tried this, but...I must have screwed something up, because now I can't even access the address remotely.

I've decided it's time to go with a Red Hat 9, LAMP type thing, hopefully with this as an installer for everything after Red Hat is running, I think:

http://www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp-linux.html#372

Can I ask you, in the RH install guide, it says I basically have 3 options to work with for installing. Given that I don't plan on hooking other computers up to this machine (or, at the most, I might buy a router so I can access the web with my laptop from home) should I be chosing the Server installation, or the Workstation, or...? I AM going to be running it as a server (by which I mean, I want it to be hooked up to the web so I can access the sites I'm building), for testing purposes...so I'm not sure. What would you recommend? Basically, I'll be building anything from standard HTML/Flash sites to at least 2 (for now) phpNuke sites.

Any advice is much appreciated. I've tried going down the server road before, didn't get very far, but now it's a little more critical that I get this up and running.

Shawn

That looks like a good thing you've chosen there

I'd go with the server option, as this'll probably provide greater security for you. But, I'll tell you now that I'm not much good with Linux. I've only really used Windows for setting up servers etc, so you may want to try to find someone who has a much greater knowledge than me to help!
