XP Network
I have a problem which for the life of me I can't figure out.
I have a desktop and a Laptop which I would like to share on my network. I have a Linksys wireless router connnected to my Cable Connection. The Desktop is wired to the router, and the laptop is connected with a wireless connection. I have files that I would like to transfer between the two, as well as share the printer on the desktop. Any ideas? David. |

Hi David,
Some things to check on each computer: Are the computers on the same workgroup? Is the TCP/IP network protocol installed on both computers? Are the IP addresses set correctly? Eg: computer 1 IP:192.168.0.1 subnet: 255.255.255.0 computer 2 IP: 192.168.0.2 subnet: 255.255.255.0 Can you ping from one computer to the other? Are the cables / wireless connection working OK Is there any firewall software running? Setting all of these settings correctly should enable you to network between the two computers. HTH, Edwin |

Also make sure that the data you want to share is in a folder that is shared.

I can ping between the computers no problem.
And there are shared folders on each computer, but I can't get into them for some reason. Ideas? David. |

What happens when you type in \\computername into the address bar in Windows Explorer, changing computername for the name of the computer? Do you see a list of shared folders on that computer?
Perhaps it's a permissions issue. On both computers, create idential user accounts - make sure that you have an account on both computers which has the same username and password, then try accessing the remote computer with this account. Have you checked that no firewall software is running. This includes things like Internet Connection Firewall (built into XP) and third-party ones such as ZoneAlarm. These can prevent communication between machines. To disable ICF right-click on your Local Area Connection in Network Connections in the Control Panel and select Properties. You'll find the setting in the Advanced tab. Quote:
Could you elaborate a bit on the "I can't get into them"? What exactly are you trying to do? Do you get any errors messages? |

Just say something in the topic when you get back and I'll try and get this problem solved.
