XP Networking problem via Broadband Router
Hello,
I'm trying to set up a home network for file/printer sharing. I have a desktop PC and laptop PC with 802.11b (both running XP Home), connected via a Linksys router - the desktop by a standard ethernet cable, the laptop wirelessly. Internet sharing is fine. Both computers are also running the "dreaded" (or so it seems in networking circles) Zonealarm - free version; the laptop also has Norton Internet Security. I followed a step-by-step networking/workgroup tutorial on the net, including disabling the XP firewall, enabling NetBIOS over TCP/IP and adding each computer's IP/subnet to each copy of Zonealarm. My desktop allows me to see the workgroup, although it cannot access the laptop. It cannot ping the laptop's IP. The laptop cannot see the workgroup at all, but it can ping the desktop. It can't ping itself though....? MM101 Last edited by ModeMan101 : May 16th, 2004 at 09:06 PM. |

Wow, this is almost the same situation I have. I can't seem to get my wireless laptop to access my main computer (which uses ethernet) and the other way around. The folder of the harddrive of the main computer is in my laptop's Network folder, but when I try to access it, it says the network path is not found and the drive is inaccessible. Both uses XP. I also have a Win98 computer also. I can set a folder's "share" option on any folder in Win98 (using ethernet) and be able to read whatever's in the folder by my main computer, but that's about it. I can't get my Win98 (nor my laptop) computer to access my printer either connected to my main computer either. All can access the net fine.
Edit: looks like there's a similar thread to this... guess I'll check it out if it'll help.

I've checked out the various other threads with similar problems, but I haven't been able to find anything enlightening to my situation. My first question is, if my laptop can't ping itself or be pinged, how do I remedy that?
Re-reading my original post, one thing I haven't done yet is disable Norton's firewall on my laptop. I don't know if that might be the reason that it's "invisible"...? MM101 |

Yes, do try removing/disabling firewalls to check that they aren't causing any problems.

I've got pretty much the same problem but no post I've read so far have solved my problem.
I got 3 computers on a linksys router. 1 labtop with xp home, 1 desktop with xp hom and one desktop with win98. The two desktops can see each other on the network and they share. The labtop can ping the others but not itself...(No, I do not have a firewall) and the desktops can't see or ping the labtop. But, the labtop is recognized by the router and it can access the internet. Anyone with ideas?? I made sure the xp firewall was off. |

The fact that you can't ping the laptop from itself or the desktops makes me think that there is a firewall. Just double check that you don't have anything like ZoneAlarm, and that ICF is off. Also, some antivirus programs come with firewalls - try disabling these for the moment.

ARRRGG I'm gona go crazy!
Ok...here's the deal now. My two desktops that were seeing each other on network neighborhood last night aren't seeing each other today. They still can ping each other and everything. My xp desktop doesn't even let me go on the mshome group and gives me this answer "Home is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network ressource...." Concerning the labtop and it's firewall...It doesn't have zonealarm and the norton on it is the same one that's on the xp desktop and it doesn't have a firewall. Is there a diagnostic tool or something that could help me identify if there's a hidden firewall somewhere on this labtop? This home networking thing is starting to irritate me. Thanks for your help |

Umm... can you show me the ipconfig for each of the three computers? There's one thing I want to check. (see the sticky for details of how to do this)

At this moment, I can see the desktop win98 and share with it from my desktop xp
but the desktop xp can't see itself and the win98 can share with the xp but it cannot see it in the network neighborhood. The labtop is still blind as a bat. All of them connect to the internet fine. |

ok - a few things. On the laptop, NetBIOS seems to be disabled. Make sure that this is enabled. Also, check that on the other two computers NetBIOS is enabled.
The laptop seems to have more than just the one connection. Make sure that all of the others are disabled, leaving just the first one which has the address 192.168.1.101. |

I enabled NetBIOS on all three but it still doesn'T work.
I now see the win98 desktop from my xp desktop but I can't share with it because the network path isn't found. The win98 cannot see or find the xp desktop anymore. It gives me a //ALDO/ALDO is not accessible. the network path wasn't found. |
