On both computers can you click start, run and type "ipconfig /all > C:\ipconfig.txt" (without the quotes). Then, copy the contents from the two ipconfig.txt files into your next post.

Check that both computers are on the same workgroup.

Do you have any firewall software running (such as ZoneAlarm or the built-in Internet Connection Firewall)?

For file sharing, have you shared a folder. Right-click the folder and select Properties. Click the Sharing tab and make sure that it is shared on the network. Then, on the other computer, in the Address bar of Windows Explorer type "\\computername\folder" (without the quotes). Replace computername with the name of the other computer, and folder with the name of the shared folder.

For the Internet access, have you shared it correctly on the first computer. Right-click the connection, select Properties, click the advanced tab and check that it is shared. Then, on the other computer check that the default gateway is set to the IP address of the first computer. If you still can't access the internet, can you browse to this site http://216.239.39.99 ?

HTH,

Edwin

xp pro network help

thnx for your reply

i can click run and type "ipconfig /all > C:\ipconfig.txt" but a black window flashes up then disapears, thats all, on both pc's.

my internet is now working on my 2nd pc, faster than it was before but it only downloads at a few KB/S.i have a fast internet connection should this make it download/use the net faster?

i can now access each pc's shared folder from one another but files will not transfer at all, error message "source file path to deep" or " cannot copy file".

all permissions are set for file sharing, both pc's are in the same work group, i can ping them fine and see them fine.

could TCP settings be wrong. i have installed NetBEUI protocall.

thnx

With the ipconfig thing, when you type it in the run dialog box you should only see a black screen flash up. What it does is to create a file (C:\ipconfig.txt) with the contents of the black screen. Check your C drive and you should find it there. You can then copy everything from these two files (one for each computer) into your next post. However, since you now have communication between both computers, it's probably not necessary.

With the file sharing, you shouldn't need the netbeui protocol. Use the Internet Protocol TCP/IP only. This should be fine as both of your computers are using XP.

Are you sure that when you shared the folder you made sure that you gave yourself permission to change the directory from the network.
