Cool xp pro permission problem

Hi I just bought a new bones comp and setup xp pro OS
I'm attempting to setup a peer to peer network between xp pro on main gateway comp and xp home on vaio laptop.

whenever i run the network wizardsuccessfully and return to my network places it remains blank and doesn't see my comp. If I attempt to view workgroup computers it returns a message
Quote:
Workgroup is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.
and ends with
Quote:
The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available

Can anyone help?? this is driving me nuts for 3 days now and endless re-installs and setups.
I am logged on as administror.
Running the network wizard fails and succeeds alternately.

Mel

moved...

Do you have IP addresses which are correct? Manually set them on the 192.168.0.x subnet, with the subnet mask set to 255.255.255.0.

Then check if you can ping from one computer to another.

Re

Hi thanks for the reply,
Yes we tried all the settings of the ip's and making the gateway my ip etc but the problem really seems to be in the permissions area in that it returns the error of contact administrator.
I gave remote assistance to a friend who has the same setup and he couldn't figure why we couldn't find my Computer or shared files. I can ping my computer and if I search for comp name it is there but still doesn't show in my network places.

Sometimes the laptop see's itself and my comp but access to shared files is denied with the same message.

on the gateway comp the my netwoek places screen is constantly blank

hope someone understands this

Mel

Check to see if simple file sharing is enabled. If it is, disable it.

Also check that NetBIOS is enabled.

On both computers, try using an account with exactly the same username/password.

Hi, I had a similar 'permissions' message on a new XP pro installation. The new computer could browse the other's files on the network but the other computers on the network could not browse the new one. I do not know why it occurred but I can tell you how I solved it. I assume that you have set up you network connections and you can ping etc. This might seem basic but some people omit it. Go to control panel, system, computer name, and make sure that all your computers have the same 'workgroup' name set. Then go to My computer, tools, folder options, advance settings and disable ' simple file sharing' down at the bottom. Then go to Local disk, properties, security and set your permissions as required. Then go to control panel on your new computer, click users, and set yourself a logon password. Set yourself the same password on the other computer and log on. It should ask you for the password. You should be able to see bothe computers in View network computers and you should see the folders that are shared on the other computer. Good luck.

Okay I tried all these things and still nothing inb my network places.. I think I need to go right back to basics here.. firstly I have NEVER yet accessed my computer in my network places.. it simply doesn't show so I think I have to start here.. the laptop I'm networking with see's PC1 this comp and itself and all shared folders.. it cannot however access PC1 returns a may not have permission warning.
PC1 on the other hand see's nothing Blank my network places and if I click view computers in this network I get the same error message as the very first post.. I've never got beyond this so I feel the fault is here.
I can ping PC1 I can Ping the laptop I can find PC1 if I search for computers on the network using ip.192.168.0.1 and once its found can access all shared folders in the search results screen going back to my network places... Blank.I can find Laptop by searching for computers on the network using ip 192.168.0.2 and access all shared folders in the search screen.. but still blank in my network places.

The only other thing I have noticed by the times I have had to install the network is that the network wizard works alternately.. one time its successful next its not then it is then it isn't and this is uniform it never fails twice in succession and it never succeeds twice in succession always alternate.

Does anyone have any starting Idea's?? I've been getting very frustrated for days now going round and round in circles.. any help would be appreciated greatly as I'm at a complete loss now
Thanks

Okay I now have access to all files and shared folders on the Laptop from the Host computer PC1 via my network places, however it still returns the permission error if I try to view computers on the network. The Laptop views itself and the host on view computers and shows all shared files in my network places, but can't access any files or folders on the host and is told it may not have permission.
I can ping the laptop from host but ping fails from laptop to host.
I can find the laptop from hoist by searching for computers on the network, but I can't find the host from the laptop by searching computers on the network.
IP's are manually configured 192.168.0.1 host and 192.168.0.2 laptop.. both have 255.255.255.0 gateway both have simple file sharing disabled and both have firewall disabled... where do I go now??

HELP!!!!

I guess you mean a subnet. If you have set the gateway to 255.255.255.0, then this could be a problem. Make sure that it is the subnet set to 255.255.255.0

I'm a little bit confused about what you can and can't do.

I don't really understand this. What exactly can you ping? From both computers, can you ping the other computer or not?

So you can access the other computer, but you just can't see it in the My Network Places page? What happens if you type in \\computername into the address bar of Windows Explorer?

okay yep sorry I confused things.. I'll take it simply PC1 is the host Desktop
The second computer in the crossover cable network is a Sony vaio Laptop.

working on PC1 I can access all shared files on the laptop and can now view them in my network places. I can also ping the laptop from the Desktop PC1. However if I click view workgroup computers I'm told I dont have permission.

Workgroup is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available.

If I move now to the Laptop.. I cannot ping the desktop PC1. I can view the Desktop shared files in my network places and I can view PC1 and the laptop in view network computers.. however I can't access any files on the Desktop PC1 instead I get an error message.

Pc1 is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permission.
The network path was not found.

Does this help??
