xp remote desktop
I have the remote desktop working on my home network. I would like to be able to access my desktop from my laptop from some remote location. Am I correct in thinking that all I need to do is put in the default gateway address from the router's routing table and forward ports 81 and 3389 to the desktop? Do I need to make any adjustments to the desktop?

I think you only need port 3389 open - I don't think it uses 81. And I'm not sure what you mean about this:

But in answer to your question, Quote:
I don't think so, as long as it isn't running its own firewall. |

On the router, you need to forward connections to port 3389 only, to the machine that you want to access remote desktop on. On that machine, be sure that port 3389 is enabled, and also that remote desktop connections is allowed to the machine. If you are using Zone Alarm, make sure that connections to 3389 are allowed from both the Internet Zone and the Local Network Zone.
To connect to your remote computer from you laptop, connect to the internet. And then put in the public IP address (the internet IP address as windows calls it) that your router has, into remote desktop, and all should be good. If you would like a more detailed guide. send me an email to eastonroyce@roycesoftware.com, or post a reply here and I'll post a detailed guide. |
