XP to XP networking

Hello,

I have a home network that I feel should be failry straight forward. Two XP pro machines. Both with tcp/ip, netbios enabled, file and print sharing. No firewall. Going through a lynksis router. Both joined to the same work group name. Up until a few days ago my network WORKED!! I was sharing a printer and a few folders. One night it stopped working.

Here are the symptoms. The two machines are askit and askit_2. In the workgroup on askit I can see both askit and askit_2. I can ping askit_2 and access it no problems. On askit_2 I can not always see askit and I can not ping its IP. on askit_2 I can ping itself, the default gateway and the router. There is no firewall on either machine. They both TCP/IP, netbios enabled, and file and printer sharing.
I have uninstalled an reinstalled the network cards on both machines. I have gone to a new workgroup name and back. Basically I have done everything I can think possible and I am really at a loss. Well everything short of reinstalling windows.
Also I really don't remember installing anything new on askit_2 on the day when it stopped working. Both computers can get on the internet but is it possible that something could be wrong with the router??

Does anyone have any suggestions. They are greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Desmond

On each computer, can you click Start, Run and type "ipconfig /all > C:\ipconfig.txt" (without the quotes). Then, copy the contents of ipconfig.txt for each computer into your next post.

System Restore

Since it worked before, I would do a 'System Restore' to a point before all your problems on both machines. That basically take all your settings and puts them how they were on what ever date you choose.
The way you do that is click Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System restore. Follow the prompts from there. God Bless
