Understanding the 2^n-2 formula
Can any body help me understand how to use the formula 2^n-2 ive just started networking and iam going in for my network + in feb and ive just got the understanding of ip / subneting which was an arsehole ! But still cant find an answer to the formula 2^n-2 they give an eg but no meaning ie 2^8-2=254 hosts . SOME BODY PLEASE HELP ME ! ! ! ! Any other tips for newbies would be nice . Thanks guys . . . . . . . .

By convention hostid = 0 refers to the network itself and hostid = all 1's is a broadcast, hence the -2.
