    10/100/1000 networking


    We are making a small network at home and will use file sharing transfer heavily.
    We thought to buy 10/100/1000 network switch, cards, and cables.
    Question is: is it mandatory that motherboard must support networking for 10/100/1000 or using cards support 10/100/1000 solve the issue?
    We are using old computers like dell 745 core to due.

    It is just that we gonna buy 16 or 20 computers with 20 cards, 3 switches, 2 adsl 2+ routers and cables for 10/100/1000, so it is a lot of money and this is why I am worried about going wrong.
    Also one last thing, does file transfer using 10/100/1000 will be the fast like USB 3 or will be slow?

    The motherboard must support the type of card that you're adding for it to work, but the type of networking port built into the motherboard doesn't matter. You can add a 1000Mbps card to a motherboard with a built-in 100Mbps port and still take advantage of the 1000Mbps card (assuming of course that your networking cable is plugged into the 1000Mbps card and not the motherboard's built-in port).

    1000Mbps Ethernet is much slower than USB 3 (5000Mbps), but about twice as fast as USB 2 (480Mbps).

    Sorry, I do not understand.
    The built in network port in the motherboard is just 10/100 only.
    And because I need a high speed file transfer I will use:
    - Network card d-link 10/100/1000
    - Switch D-Link 10/100/1000
    - Cables belden support 10/100/1000
    Any thing else needed?
    So my question is will this work?

    I REALLY don't understand your whole setup, but to answer your question the 10/100/1000 is a multitude of standards. 10/100/1000 means that it can run at 10 Mbps, 100, Mbps, OR 1000 Mbps. The MOTHERBOARD does not specifically have any compatibility with that. However, many have *integrated* NIC's. Truly, it's still a NIC separate from the motherboard.

    So if you have a card that can run 10/100 and a switch that can run 10/100/1000 you will likely get a link up without configuration at 100 Mbps.

    For cables you will want to get Category 5e or Cat6. I'd recommend Cat6 if you can, Cat5e if you can't (Cat 5 will have problems with 1000 Mbps circuits if it runs them at all.)

    Yes I did bought cat6.
