changing oracle character set ?

Is it possible to change the character set in oracle server once it is installed?
Where to get the details about compatibility of character sets in Oracle 9i .

I am having a Oracle 7.3.3 which needs to be connected to Oracle 9i.
Oracle 9i is running with UTF8 and Oracle 7.3.3 is running with
US7ASCII
and we are not able to connect to Oracle 9i from 7.3.3?
What is the way out?

US7ASCII is the core subset of UTF-8. Meaning, every character in US7ASCII is a valid character in UTF-8 as well.

So you see no problems connecting to Oracle 9.2.04 from Oracle 7.3.3 client?
I have faced the error ORA-03106: fatal two-task communication protocol error while connecting to Orale9.2.0.4 server using a Oracle 7.3.3 client

But could successfully connect to Oracle 9.2.0.3 server which was running with WE8ISO8859P1 character set, from a oracle 7.3.3 client which was running with US7ASCII character set.
