Excel Query Returns "Invalid Scale Value"

I use a Microsoft query in Excel to access data in an oracle database thourgh ODBC connection. Everything works fine. However, when I include a where clause with date (for example, where DOC_DATE = [para 1]), excel gives me an error message "Invalid Scale Vaue" when I put some date such as "01/08/2004" in the parameter window. Strangely, this only happens in Excel 97. Excel 2000 and above work fine for those queries. Any one has any idea how I can resolve this problem? Thanks a lot!
