Oracle Shared memory Problem

The Oracle 8.1.6 shared memory pool seems to increase constantly over a period of time until the systems grinds to a halt.

A restart seems to fix it. But there is no explanation for this behaviour.

The database is running on a windows NT platform.

I have never heard of this before, has anyone else experienced this problem?
Where do I starting look to find an answer?

Thanks!
