Select fields longer than length x

I'm trying to select only codes from a column that are above a certain length. how would this be achieved? I've tried char_length(fieldname) > x in the where clause but i'm getting the error ORA-00904: "char_length" invalid identifier. Thanks in advance.

    Just try:
    Code:
    LENGTH(fieldname) > x
