Shell - Keep-alive batch file (windows xp)
Here's the situation: I run an openvpn server on my desktop comp so that when I'm on the road with my laptop I can have a secure connection if need be. The problem is that the desktop is on a wireless connection (the way my network is setup requires it to be wireless) which drops the connection at seemingly random times. The result is that I will attempt to connect to the openvpn server only to find that the desktop is offline. Rebooting the desktop allows the connection to reestablished.
My idea for a solution: I would like to make a batch file that causes the desktop to ping my wireless router to test if the connection is good or broken. If the connection is good, no action is required. If the connection is broken, I would like the batch file to tell the desktop to reboot. I plan on using the task scheduler to run the batch file at a specified interval. thanks for reading |

What is the smallest period that you have noticed the connect has dropped out? If it's more than 24 hours, you could always just set the task scheduler to reboot at say 4am each day.

Sometimes the computer will go for days without dropping, but more commonly it seems to go about 5-6 hours. |
