I'm trying to write a multi form program. I'm having the user login and then passing the username and other infomation to the next cgi program. To creating an html link http://server1/cgi-bin/next?file=$file.
This appears to work fine, but on the when I submit information on the second page. I get on error that the $file can't be opened. The error is blank for the $file variable. I'm very confused.

It the output of your 1st script doesn't interpret what $file is, of course, what your 2nd script would get from the query string is "file=$file".

Don't submit that, examine your html source and see if $file is still there. If so, your 1st script got some problems.
If you change all this to POST method and use hidden fields, it should be alot easier.
