What does it mean I try to execute a perl script and the text of the script shows up in the browser window?

The server doesn't recongize the extension your using. Some server require one particular extension to be used with all Perl scripts,..IE .pl or .cgi If your using a .cgi extension and the server requires only the .pl extension, it will simply parse it as a text file.
