I'm a fairly proficient Perl programmer. I run a few websites and use Perl quite a bit to add interactivity and make maintenance easier. I don't attempt to make a business out of programming, but have know someone who would like me to do a job and pay by the hour. It will probably take around 7 hours.
What do I charge? I was thinking $20 or $30 an hour. If any of you do freelance work let me know what your going hourly rate is. Thanks! |

As a salaried employee, I figure my 'hourly' rate is about $25/hour as a perl programmer.
For freelancing, $30-$40 should do it. |

Actually, it depends on your level of programming and what the project is. Regardless, in freelance work you generally charge DOUBLE what YOU would get from a full time employer. A serious programmer should get at least $80 an hour, and up to $200/hr for complex projects.
I do perl/mysql... but I also do web design... I get $50/hr for that... includes html/dhtml/javascript/flash... that's it. Just charge double of what you would get if you were a full time employee. |
