    I assume you're referring to installing the MozRepl module.

    how to install mozrepl on this
    From the command line prompt, type: cpan install MozRepl

    note: i tried it several times - and everytime it failed.
    You should provide those details.

    ps: what ingredients are needed
    Do you mean what are the module dependencies?

    Have you checked the documentation on cpan? http://deps.cpantesters.org/?module=MozRepl;perl=latest

    hello dear FishMonger

    many many thanks for the reply which is very very helpful! Well i have run into various and really terrible issues.

    Your link to the CPAN-Dependencies is very very interesting. I really like this page.
    BTW - the OpenSuse-people are somewhat "religios ppl." they do not allow me to install via CPAN - they force me to do all the things by adding a Repository (from opensuse).

    But - guess that i have to try out the CPAN-way. It seems to be a good way.
    The last time i tried to install Mozrepl i did something wrong and i guess that i messed up all the machine. All the things were messed up totally.

    At the end .- have had errors over errors. it was terrible.

    see the error reports i have had...
    btw - i guess that i somethimes have had a bad Make on the machine - or a bad make-test. What do you think"!?

    here i provide you with the reports of the failed trials of installation ....

    what has happened in the past: i have had serious issues with the installation of

    MECHA::FireFox Hmm - i should have to work through the steps in
    WWW::Mechanize::Firefox::Troubleshooting! But believe me - this is pretty hard to do: Especially the "Installation" section seems particularly applicable to my situation here!

    see also...: https://forums.opensuse.org/english/...make-test.html

    n i decided to install WWW-Mechanize-Firefox-0.68.tar.gz

    but i run into troubles : see the following:

    Code:
    Parse errors: No plan found in TAP output
    Files=83, Tests=78,  7 wallclock secs ( 0.26 usr  0.08 sys +  4.64 cusr  0.56 csys =  5.54 CPU)
    Result: FAIL
    Failed 78/83 test programs. 14/78 subtests failed.
    make: *** [test_dynamic] Fehler 2

    one dependency not OK (MozRepl::RemoteObject); additionally test harness failed
      /usr/bin/make test -- NOT OK
    //hint// to see the cpan-testers results for installing this module, try:
      reports CORION/WWW-Mechanize-Firefox-0.68.tar.gz
    Running make install
      make test had returned bad status, wont install without force
    Failed during this command:
     ZIGOROU/MozRepl-0.06.tar.gz                  : make_test NO
     CORION/MozRepl-RemoteObject-0.34.tar.gz : make_test NO one dependency not OK (MozRepl)
     CORION/WWW-Mechanize-Firefox-0.68.tar.gz : make_test NO one dependency not OK (MozRepl::RemoteObject); additionally test harness failed
    ,,,,,also interesting - some reports (in the past!!):

    If i run the script i got fatal errors -

    Code:
    linux-vi17:/home/martin/bin # perl get_shots.pl Failed to connect to , problem connecting to "localhost", port 4242:
     connecting to the denied at /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.12.3/MozRepl/Client.pm line 144

    what is aimed:

    i have a list of 2,500 URLs, one on each line, saved in a file. i want the script to open the file, read a line, then retrieve the website? If so, something like this:

    Filename: urls.txt

    PHP Code:
    Google.com
    CNN
    .com
    news
    .bbc.co.uk
    Bing
    .com
    Yahoo
    .com
    and so on and so forth...
    Then the code:

    Code:
        use WWW::Mechanize::Firefox;
        my $mech = WWW::Mechanize::Firefox->new();

        open(INPUT, "urls.txt") or die "Can't open file: $!";

        while (<INPUT>) {
          chomp;
          $mech->get($_);
          my $png = $mech->content_as_png();
        }
        close(INPUT);
        exit;
    i try to run this little programme on my linux box.

    But as mentioned above - this were the issues i have runned into. Now i have a totally fresh installed Opensuse - 12.3 and i can begin at the beginning.

    Guess that i have to start over with the CPAN

    what do you think!?

    Where did you get that nonsense?

    Downloading/installing pre-compiled binaries from repositories is the most common and generally easiest, but by no means is it the only or required method.

    Downloading the source code and compiling it yourself is common and the desired method when installing Perl modules. CPAN simplifies the process. The primary prereq is having a C/C++ compiler.

    Your posts tend to jump all over the place with very little coherent detail.

    This thread started out asking about installing MozRepl and now it seems like that question is being dropped and you're now focusing on WWW::Mechanize::Firefox.

    Downloading/installing from a repository has its upsides and downsides. Depending on how the maintainers maintain the repo, the latest updated module patches become automatically available to you. Of course, the whole deal with repos depends on the maintainer keeping them up to date (yes, I'm looking at you, RedHat, who refused to update DBI.pm for a very long time)

    With cpan install, you will need to periodically check back for updates and apply them yourself. Also, if the perl module merely wraps a C library, you may need to install the C library by hand first. On the bright side, you control exactly what versions of the module you've installed.

    I have not used nor plan on using either of them, but based on your partial posting of the install output, it would appear that MozRepl and several of its extensions are prereqs of WWW-Mechanize-Firefox and need to be installed first.

    guess - that i need some perl modules -

    a. FireFox Mechanize
    b. Mozrepl

    and first of all - a good Make (note; that seems to be a major issue in the past times...

    well - guess that i firstly should start with a good MAKE

    what do you think?

    Please post the output of: perl -V

    First step is to verify which compiler was used to compile perl and make sure you have that compiler installed.

    Login as root or su - root to get root's shell access.

    Use cpan to install the modules.

    Login to the cpan shell with this command:
    perl -MCPAN -e shell

    The first time you login to the shell, it will ask you if you want to manually configure the parameters. Answer yes and accept the defaults for anything you're not sure about, with 1 exception. The prerequisites_policy setting defaults to "ask", but should be set to "follow".

    If you're not prompted to configure it, then issue these 3 commands at the prompt to make sure the prereq setting is correct.
    cpan> o conf prerequisites_policy follow
    cpan> o conf build_requires_install_policy yes
    cpan> o conf commit

    Then try installing the modules.

    Before you install the perl modules, make sure that you have the MozRepl plugin installed on firefox.

    I tried to explain once before how I installed Mechanize-Firefox in this post last year. I'll try again. Hope it helps.

    1. Get the latest version of Firefox from http://www.mozilla.org.

    2. Install the MozRepl addon from inside Firefox. Here's how:

    a. Choose Add-ons from the Tools menu

    b. Search for MozRepl in the search box I've circled in red

    c. Click the install button

    d. Click the small 'Restart now' link after the add-on is installed

    e. Start the add-on. Nothing's going to happen until you manually start MozRepl from the Tools menu

    Also notice the 'Activate on startup' option. You'll want to choose that also so you don't have to manually start MozRepl each time.

    ---

    That's done. Now you have to get the Mechanize module from CPAN at this link.

    Click the download link I indicated on the web page.

    Find the tar.gz file in your downloads directory and expand it.

    You can move the expanded folder to the desktop or wherever is easy for you to work with, then open a terminal window and navigate into that expanded WWW-Mechanize-Firefox-0.74 directory.

    Leave Firefox running during this next step. When you are in the directory, issue the command

    sudo cpan .
    Ideally, the installation will work perfectly: all prerequisites will be followed, and the job will be completed. You should see Firefox responding by creating tabs during the test phase.

    ---

    But, if it doesn't, I'll tell you about my own experience with this tonight.

    I'm running Mac OS 10.8.3 Lion. My system perl is 5.12.4. In November, the installation was flawless. No problems. Tonight, many things went wrong.

    I had errors with MozRepl I believe, and the platform matrix showed errors for Darwin (Mac OS X) with my perl version, so I used perlbrew to upgrade my perl to 5.16.0. Then had other errors. Downgraded MozRepl to an earlier version that had tested good and had an endless stream of "MozRepl-RemoteObject not responding" messages during tests, and couldn't advance.

    MozRepl has a default port number of 4242. Issued this command from the terminal to see if there was a conflict:

    lsof | grep 4242
    System response was:
    Dictation 67779 keath txt REG 1,2 12402 15054242 /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/SpeechObjects.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/DictationServices.framework/Versions/A/Resources/dictation_mic_071.tiff
    So yeah, there is a conflict on Mac OS X now because the Dictation framework is listening on that port for speech events. I turned off dictation from the system preferences, and then restarted Firefox.

    Hope you can see that the response this time shows that firefox is now listening on that same port. So that's a very important test you can perform. Make sure Firefox is on, and actually listening on port 4242 when trying to install Mechanize.

    There was an error with perlbrew 5.16.0 for Mac, so I had to go to perl-blead which was version 5.18.0. That mostly worked.

    There were modules that did not install automatically. I don't know why. CPAN is set to follow prerequisites on my machine, but perhaps they forgot to indicate some modules as necessary.

    I had to manually install AnyEvent and Template-Toolkit. (Template::Toolkit wasn't required at install, only runtime.)

    I installed them from the command line:
    sudo cpan install AnyEvent
    sudo cpan install Template
    I still had difficulty with MozRepl, but noticed that the failing module was actually JSON_XS on my machine. That's not something I've had problems with before, so I believe it could be attributed to me using a bleeding edge version of perl. I ran a manual installation of JSON:

    sudo cpan install JSON
    but this time answered 'NO' when asked if I wanted to install JSON_XS. The other modules work just fine without it.

    Finally, I went back into the directory for WWW-Mechanize-Firefox-0.74 and issued the command

    sudo cpan .
    The installation was completed.

    I ran the test script from my earlier post and it created thumbnails successfully.

    Good luck.

    hello dear keath

    i did all you said -

    but i guess that i run into the (very very old) troubles - with MAKE

    as many many times before i - had no luck - look the bad make test!

    well - this is so terrible

    guess that i need a special version of MAKE

    what can i do now

    probably MAKE GCC will help

    what do you think!`?

    I don't see any problem with 'make'. Seems to me you probably have it installed already.

    Here's the error message:

    Can't locate MozRepl/RemoteObject.pm in @INC
    Do this:

    Code:
    sudo cpan install MozRepl::RemoteObject
    Then try again (with FireFox running). Anytime you see an error, "Can't find <module> in @INC", install the module yourself manually. If that module fails to build or install, post the error messages.
