BIG PROBLEM, curupt Jpeg???

I recently had to burn a whole bunch of images onto cd, due to a harddrive format I was gonna perform...I burned the files...the cd showed no errors during burning....

BUT NOW!!!!

not all images but almost all my jpeg files when I try to open them...in any program, I.E., windows preview, photoshop, illustrator, u name it...they won't open and I get this message...

"unknown or invalid JPEG marker type is found"

I never had a problem with the files before...now I got all these pics that I need, they are very important...and I can't open them...the file sizes are the same if that matters....

SOMEBODY PLEASE HELP ME!!! PLEEEEEEEEEEEAAASE!!!

J

Have you tired copying a file off the CD back to the hard drive and opening it? I've seen similar errors in my lab, sometimes this helps...

It sounds like they might not be jpegs. Do you see a file extension of JPG? If you're in Windows you might not see it even if it's there. If so you'll need to go to "Tools > Folder Options," click "view" and deselect "Hide extensions for known file types."

If/when you do see an extension, try changing it to other formats and see if the file opens. You might try some of the more popular ones: .pct, .gif, .tif, .eps, and if you're using Photoshop, try .psd.

I'm having exactly the same problem. Pics originally transferred from photo CDs. been on HDD (XP Pro) for a couple of months and behaving fine, now all of a sudden the whole folder (and 20 subfolders) are full of corrupt JPGs. Can't open, preview, thumbnail view any of them. in PS7, IE, etc...
Literally hundreds of photos reduced to nothing.
I've even tried opening them on other machines with no success.

Did you manage to find out what's causing this and what the solution is ??

hi there,
i opened jpegs and a psd that photoshop cs would not open.. they opened in internet explorer 6 and windows xp fax and file viewer. originally all the problem files came in emails. i did a search for the faulty files and found duplicates all over the place. so the key here might be, to do a search...the files you need might be in folders somewhere.

hi,

unfortunately (for me) these files were backed up to CD-ROM a while back. I've done a few fdisk & reformats since then, so the originals are long gone..

the jpeg files on the CD-ROM won't open in any image editing software (i've tried about a dozen) , nor in IE...

I think this may solve the problem

Adobe did recognize this problem in the past. There is a tool in the Adobe website for you to use. I used this tool a couple of years ago, so it has been awhile but I know it is out there. All you would have to do is drag and drop the file in the application and it fixes the file. If you cannot find this tool, i suggest you rename the file for example the original file was named "tree.jpg" rename it to "tree1.jpg" make sure you include the file extension.

Good luck!!!

How would I begin to look for this tool? I have tried everything suggested in this thread. I even tried using a recovery program called Davory? Nothing works.

(I burned the pics from my hard drive onto a CD ROM, and I checked the files before I had to restore my hard drive - they worked. Now those files are corrupted. )

Thanks in advance for any help. These are my father's pictures & I'm feeling sick to my stomach b/c they are irreplaceable.

anoush,
If you checked those files from the CD you burned them to, it's highly unlikely they are corrupted. Upload one here.

I am having the same problem as Anoush with reloaded .jpeg files not being able to be read due to a "bad marker". Can I upload one of them here for help on this?
