Blur Edge

I'm really new to Photoshop. I want to blur the edge of an image in a layer so that its edge seems to fade into the background.

How do I do this?

filter -> blur -> gaussian blur

What gaussian blur will do is blur the entire image...Go to Filter>Blur>Radial Blur. You'll just have to experiment with it a lil bit to get the effect you need, but that's what will work.

In the pic that you posted it looks like a Gradient was used though
Like 2 seperate layers blended in together where they met.
Youd have to use a layer mask, set the colours to b/w and apply a gradient. That will give you the blended look that you have there.

Or even the eraser can do that....Using the airbrush setting and depending on the pressure. Using the eraser around the edges of that yellowness.

Blurring and airbrushing will work if you have lots of time, but here's an easy way to make that effect (it's called a vignette):

a) Make a selection on the layer to be blurred out (I often use a simple eliptical selection) You may have to play with the selection size once or twice to get the proper effect upon completion.
b) Go to SELECTIONS>FEATHER and depending on the size of your image you may wish to have a 5-25 pixel 'blur zone', or more if you have a high res pic. Try 10-15 for now.
c) Invert your selection to select everything BUT the area within your lines. The shortcut is CTRL-SHIFT-I
d) You now cut away everything but your original selection, CTRL-X

You should now be left with your original imagery fuzzing out into nothing at the edges.
