Fade-out with masks and gradient tool?
I'm sure this is simple, and I've searched for a basic tutorial, but what I find involves much more complicated processes than my simple project:
I have a layer and I want it to fade to transparent (using the gradient tool?). Last time I did this, I used masks of some type, but forgot to make notes on what I did... Can someone point me in the right direction?

you dont even need to use masks, just use the gradient tool with whatever colour you are using and then put the second colour as transparent, and it will automatically fade to transparent

No, I believe you DO need a layer mask to fade an actual layer out to transparent.
Just make a layer above the working layer to fade, make it a 'mask' and use the colour-transparent gradient tool...should fade the layer without putting a colour on it. HTH.
