Filling an area with a certain colour

I have an image that I wish to edit slightly, by filling the background with a certain colour.

The image is located here: http://www.brockfordtechnology.co.uk/invicta1.jpg

What I basically want is the horse to remain white, with the black border, but the main background (underneath the horse) to be maroon.

I've really little idea how to do this - all I know is that it may have something to do with masks??

Many thanks,
Ed Ludlow

You can use the paint fill bucket..

if it doesn't appear as the bucket, it'll look like a gradient of black to white, just hold this and a menu will appear and select the bucket

Select a tolerance of about 2, because the contrast is so great, it'll be really simple to do

Another method of doing it would be to use the magic wand, W, to select the white background, delete it, and then throw a layer under this one to allow a more versatile background.

Doing this will also allow you to add things like shadows and such to your horse.

G'luck.
