Filter effect in new layer?
Hi.
I have a problem.. I have a picture of a face and the background is water. I want to make a water face and to do that i need to make a water effect out of the face. "Plastic wrap" is a nice filter to use. I select the face and applying the filter, but the filter is now "in" the face (merged), but i want the plastic wrap filter to be in a new layer so i can disable the face and have the water-face effect and the background left. How do i do that? If i make a new layer above the face and applaying the filter, i get a error because there wasn't any pixel to use. Please help ![]() |

okay, what i'd suggest is making a selection of the face, and hit 'ctrl-j' which will make a new layer wiht the selection.
then, add your filter to the face on the new layer, and that way you can toggle it on and off as you need. And, have you tried some of the 'wave' filters too? They work well. Hope that helps!

I don't think you understand what i mean..
Here i got a example (bad example but it should work): URL As you see i got: -Face and filter -Water effect -Background But i got Face and filter in one layer, that means that i can't separate the real face and the Plastic wrap filter cause i don't want to see tha face, i want to see the filter and the water background (water effect) |

i think u might be going the wrong way about this... you can separate layer effects into new layers, but not filters that i know of...
Try this: fiorst of, you need water bg.. white bg leaves to much to guessing how it will look.. nothing works like the real thing. Now, i would advise having the face you made with the plastic warp blend in using different blending options, such as overlay for instance. Mind, overlay and most other blending options will not work on white or any single color background so you will need water in the bg for this. Also, to eliminate the color from the face during the blend (i suppose you want to make it as if the water itself was making the face [some sort of a water nymph] ) try and apply desaturate to it (image->adjusments->desature). Ultimately you can apply a gradinent over the photo by going image->adjusments->photo gradient and choose the colors of the water (shadows and highlights of the water). All this, mixed with you plasic warp should give u an interesting water effect. All in all you have to try it to make it work, so good luck ![]() Hope i helped |

I'm not sure if this'll work like you want it to...reason being, the plastic wrap filter NEEDS the face to create itself...I have no idea how you'd go about getting rid of the face one you have the filter on it.
Hopefully someone'll come up with something! |

Quote:
if you use photo gradient under image adjustments, the face will take the color of the water ( use the color picker to choose water shadow and highlight colors). choose luminosity as blending option of the layer. Try that before the gradient actually. so: 1. do the plastic warp (i wouldnt use that filter, but oh well) 2. Make the water as another layer underneath the face 3. blend the face with luminosity if the top 3 dont get it close use the photo gradient as the last(fourth) step.. thats the quickest although not most realistic way to get to what you want... |

heres something i put together using above mentioned options....
please understand that this was a 5min job it can be made far more realistic. I used a bottom surface (underwater) photo with reflecting light for texture and a photo of angelina jolie i found online I got all these different effects with different blending options after i desatureated the image.. deleted the edges, warped it & applied color gradient to it... Please note that if you want to make it seriously realisting.. having same angle shots is a MUST! The face i made should have been skewed into perspective with the bottom & then it would be far more effective for instance. hope i helped.. |
