Getting transparencies in .pngs files ??

Hey people,

I need to have transparencies in a .png file

I am trying to edit a pic for an avatar and need them to have transparencies (i.e. no white space around the pic) and dont seem to be able to do it in PS

Can it actually be done or do it have to go with gifs ??

When saving, go to File>Save For Web. Doing so will bring a large box with options regarding optimization and the like. Included is a box to include transparency amoung other things. Check this and not only will you have your transparency, but you'll have shrunk down your image significantly than having just saved it.

G'luck.

My pleasure.

Make note that PNGs can be nasty file size wise and shouldn't be used in excess. GIFs also are able to hold transparency, though won't allow vectorization nor will it be as clean.

Just bumpin' this back up again ....

Vectorisation ... i aint the best here but i do know that it is easier to store the start and end point of a line than to store the whole line itself but how does that work in images (can images work with vectors is my question i suppose) .... i know flash works with vectors alright.

Clean ... you mean kinda smudging the image ?! ... yeah, i hate that.

No matter how far into a vector you zoom, it's going to be smooth and contain no rough edges. This is because there are no pixels connecting point A from B. This is especially useful when resizing something as it won't be distorted, but may look different due to the stroke looking thicker when smaller.

Flash does infact work with vectors. I'm sure of the extent to which you can use them, but they can be imported into Photoshop CS.

Here's a rundown of vector graphics.
