how do I save transparent bg png's
everytime I save a png, it fills it in with a colored background.

If you are looking at it in IE, then it's because Microsoft is a big jerk. If you look at it in Mozilla, it looks fine.

but others would look at it in IE, how do I get around that?

You basically have to use GIF. There are some JavaScript ways of "getting around" it, but I just end up saving transparency as GIF.
