is it possible with PS

I'm using PS 7 and want to know if it's possible to make a strip of lines that twist and bend but stay parrallel and have a transparent background, the kind of thing that I have used in the top banner on this site http://www.edgefine.co.uk (although this was a pre made stock graphic) I want to learn how to make my own, I also have illustrator 9 but ain't got a clue how to use it yet so I would prefer if it could be done in PS7.

..

Short version: Yes
Long version: I found it very difficult, and there are better tools to do it

Basically its about using Bezier curves within photoshop. If you create a new document (any size), and select the Pen tool. CLick once for an anchor point (a small square should appear), click again somewhere else so the line connects two points

Next, anywhere on that line click again and drag and you should see the line distort into what is known as a 'bezier curve'. Once you've odne this you can either draw more or duplicate the layers and place them close to each other. You will probably have to create another pathy for the foldover effect. I'm sorry if this isn't clear but it's the best I can explain it - maybe someone else here has more experience in using the curves? You will have to be patient to get it perfect though I feel.

Corel Photopaint has some cool orbital brushes that you can use to replicate that effect...

define a brush pattern like the one attach then use it to draw swirling curves

Looking at that image I'd say Illustrator is your best bet and would give you cleaner results. You've got the program, use it! This is an opportunity to learn the software. Look at Illustrator's help files and plow your way through. If you decide to do this just draw your desired lines with the pen tool or make some straight ones and warp them, then paste your finished design into your psd. Basically this is the same thing that lachesis suggested, but Illustrator would give you an easier time of it.
