Unhappy .jpg, .gif, .psd won't display in PS even though PS opens correctly

This is driving me mad!! I'm working in a Dell workstation w/Windows 2000 professional PS 7.0.

I've tried all the traditional 'associate this file' but nothing works. You double click on the file, Photoshop loads, then nothing displays. Open... or even drag and drop work just fine.

Help!!!

Actually, it seems it's just .gifs and .jpgs... .psds do open up? It makes no sense to me.

I've heard from one person resetting associated files might help

But I have yet to figure that out. It involved booting using the F8 key and other scary stuff so I haven't tried it yet. (We'll, actually I did give it a try, and when my machine booted in safe mode it stalled out, so I gave up.)

It's happening to me too!! I'm running Mac OSX 10.3.7 with 768 megs of ram. When ever I open any file that should open with Photoshop it doesn't work. Photoshop just loads. I've even tried opening files when Photoshop is open, it still doesn't work. I always have to go to File > Open. Does anyone know a remedy for this? It's driving me crazy!!!!

slipjack try this...

On Windows Explorer, select any file having the extension you wish to open using Adobe Photoshop. Let's say you go to the folder where ortho_comp3.jpg is located. Select it by clicking on it. Then hold down SHIFT Key, while holding SHIFT Key, Right-Click on it and you'll see a new option in the pop-up window that says Open With, choose it and Click Choose Program... A dialog box will open and on it choose Adobe Photoshop. And before you click on the OK button, make sure to check the box that says, Always use this program to open these files. Click OK. Next time you double-click a JPEG file on your File Browser, Adobe Photoshop will be its default application. Do this to GIF files as well...

Hope this one helps.

Or before you do my first post try this... (your photoshop preferences might have been messed up)

Search for your Adobe Photoshop Preference file usually located at C:\Documents and Settings\[your user]\Application Data\Adobe\Photoshop\Adobe Photoshop Settings\

I'm not that sure about it cause I'm using Photoshop CS so there might have some differences on the folders but I'm sure you can find the file named Adobe Photoshop Prefs.psp try renaming that file or delete it. After doing it, Run Photoshop. This will reset your preferences. Now close Photoshop and try double-clicking on a PSD file on windows explorer and see if this works.

Ctrl-Alt-Shift while loading PS will prompt for a prefs deletion. This is the first step to troubleshoot any PS problem.
