Load path as selection not working ?

im using adobe photoshop 7. wen i get to the bit

'After preparing the path, all you need to do is create the selection by clicking on the "Load path as selection"
button which is located at the Path Palette. '

i get a bit stuck - the way i am doing it is in the little window that has the tabs layers, channels and paths. i select the one that it wants. wen i get up to the bit that says c'lick delete' it say that i cannot delete it because the content of this layer is not directly editable.

am i using the right thing to draw the section - im using the pen tool but wen i make the path it fills it in with color ? (not like example)

Yep, the Pen tool is what you make paths with, I think the tutorials may be made from an earlier photoshop version, starting v7 the paths are filled by default, v7 has more vector prowers. You can set the fill transparency by adjusting the Fill values located on the Layers Tab, just below the Opacity controls and same row as the Layer locking buttons.

The shortcut key to making a selection from path is to Ctrl+Click (Cmd+Click on mac?) on the path layer, either on the Path Tab or the Layers tab. Try doing this on other layers see what you will happen.

The Load Path As Selection button is located on the Path Tab third from left.
