Making an irregular chunk transparent

i have a picture that is a rectangle, but i want to cut out a piece so that the top is irregular. could someone please tell me how to make the top of my picture transparent to whatever background i put it on? thank you.

hi there,
you could make a selection using the polygon lasso..then use the background eraser to make your selection transparent.
