Masking help...

I cant seem to get how to mask. Ive read many tutorials on how to do it and when I do it my self it doesnt work out the same.

I have an image of a jar with an image of a spider in the layer above it. Im trying to make a mask to get the spider in the jar. the tutorial says to mask out the area to start and the jar should be hidden. Well when I mask out the area and leave mask edit mode all that happens is I get a selection box around the un masked area. Anyone here have any idea what Im doing wrong?
