Not sure how to explain the technique
But this site: URL has an example. On the right side, the buttons are sliced along the path of that background image. If I knew how to describe that, I could search the forums. There's probably a name for that technique so if somebody knows it, I can search away. Thanks.

They aren't actually sliced along it - if you mouse over the white space to the right, you'll notice there's still a button there.
All they do is load the "swoop" layer's content (ctrl-click on the layer). Now select the marquee tool, hold shift and select the area left of the swoop (see attachment). Invert the selection (ctrl+shift+I) and hit delete.
