Photography halftones and setting it up in Photoshop.

I work on the newspaper at my school and I am one of the photographers. Well after the last issue with our digital photography we got a guide how to set up a digital picture in Photoshop so it looks good printed. I am unsure how to do somethings in the instructions. These are the instructions.

Digital files: 300 dpi
Shadow Dot: 87
Highlight Dot: 9
85 Line Screen
Round Dot
Save picture as RGB file, adjust excess colors before convert to Grayscale.

Ok, I Know how to make round dots, and I kind of know how to adjust color, I also know how to convert to Grayscale. But everything else confuses me.

How do I set the Shadow dot and Highlight dot?
And where can I change the dpi?
And how do I set the Line Screen?

I can't seem to find those options or figure out how to change them. I looked all yesterday though the Photoshop help. But I still could not find it. Help would be greatly appreciated.

dpi can be changed by going to image > image size then resolution. you'll have the option of using the default 72 dpi resolution. Change it to 300 dpi. You'll notice a marked improvment in detail and growth in size...both W&H and file size.

As for shadow and highlight, I assume what is meant is going into image > adjustments > color balance. You'll see shadow and highlight among the options.
But they could also mean contrast, brightness, or levels... ? hmm.. I don't know.

thanks alot, but what about line screen? Is it auto set? I have explored around the options in photoshop and have never even SEEN the line screen option. Also, for the round dot option, it is in the Bitmap selection, I got to image > mode > bitmap, then I use halftone screen and that is where I adjust to round dot.

As I have no clue to what we are talking about..
I have a suggestion. Open up the PS help file, do a search for: line screen
You'll find-
Selecting halftone screen attributes
Specifying halftone screens for Bitmap-mode images

I read something about using print preivew to adjust screen attributes, And somewhere in there you can adjust the line fequency..

But I hope the search you do pulls up the right information for you.

alright, I finally understand what's happening.
It turns out you should look up those help files I pointed you to and also read the primer on this website:
http://www.adobe.com/support/techdocs/7066.htm

Reading it will help you in understanding how you can use photoshop to make your images blend well.
To quote what is meant by "line screen":
Quote:
Because halftone cells are used in rows or lines, the number of cells per inch is often expressed as "line frequency," "lines per inch," or lpi. The term "screen frequency" is sometimes used for lpi, even though there is no physical screen in a laser printer
