Photoshop Color to Black & White

Can someone please advise how I can take a COLOR photo import it into Photoshop v7.0 and transfer it to a Black & White photo?

Also, is there a transparent eraser option to revove a smudge?

Thanks in advance for your assistance. As you can probably tell from the post, I am a NEW Photoshop user.

the easiest way to turn color into B&W is, go to Image -> Mode -> greyscale.

If you have any layers they well be merged to one layer.

other ways involve playing with the red channel, using the Lightness channel in LAB mode, or using the channel mixer in monochromatic mode

here's a website that explains how to do these:

For the eraser to remove a smudge, it depends on how big the smudge is, but i'd use the stamp tool to try and fix it up.

Not strictly true - the easiest way is to go image - adjustements - desaturate.

As for smudge removal - try a combi of stamp tools, the healing brush and a little trial and error!
