how come png-24's look like crap on webpages?
it doesn't give the nice transparency transition i want it to... instead it fills up the so called "transparent" sections with this ugly grey

It's because you are looking at it in IE. If you look at it in Mozilla, it looks great.

do you know of any plug-in that will make it look better? if not, where can i get Mozilla?

mozilla is at mozilla.org but don't forget 98% of your audience probably uses IE. Personally I like to optimize for MOSe (Mozilla/Opera/Safari enhancement) but make sure nothing is missing for IE users
