proble with changing color

My problem is based on this assumption that you can change an image -or part of an image - color to whatever color you want using edit > fill.

say I have an image for example the hash like Dev Shed logo image at the top of this page. (it is named devshedtitle.gif).

1. first I enter the image in photoshop and I get a message to the effect that this image is a format that does not support embeded color profile. I choose "assign working RGB" and click ok.

2.I double click on the forground color tab and choose a color, you say a bright red color.

3. I user magic wand and select the dark green in the image.

4. From edit menu I choose Fill and click ok.

Now instead of the "bright red" color that I have on the foreground tab I get a gray color.

What do I have to do to get the color that I want?

Thanks

make a new layer above the image.
make your selection on the image,
click on the new layer,
with your 'bright red' set as the foreground colour, hit 'alt delete'
that should do it.

Thanks for your reply but layer menu is completely grayed out.

I cannot create a new layer. What should I do?

grayed out?? hmm, that's interesting.

try saving the file under a new name as a .psd. change (if it's not already) the color mode to 'RGB'.

once it's saved as a new file (psd format) you should be able to add a layer.
