    Shape transparency question

I'm trying to do something that I think should be fairly easy in photoshop but it's not coming out right... I'm trying to add snowflake shapes over an image that are transparent (?? not sure if that's the right word) and not taking away from the image... It won't let me post a link to the look I'm trying to attain so hope that description works!

but they're coming out mostly just light gray... I'm not sure if I just need to mess with the opacity or if I'm missing something.

Hopefully it's an easy answer and someone can take a minute to help me!
    Thank you....

do you mean you use Flow Opacity instead of just Opacity?
anyways try to set the Opacity of your object or just Opacity of the layer to something below 100%. and remember you need to set the Opacity, not the Flow

You should try to set the Opacity of your object Before drawing the second shape, choose Subtract Front Shape from the shape option on the control bar.
