Table-Less Design?

Hello. I am trying to determine how to build a site that breaks out of the typical "tabled" layout. Here is an example: images.template-help.com/screenshots/4400/4456-b.jpg. I've heard that CSS is good for layout, but not sure the tabless effect I am looking for requires CSS, or just good background design in Photoshop.
My experience is more with HTML sites, incorporating FLASH (made with SWiSH) elements, and PHP for database. I code everything by hand, no use of apps such as <HACK!> Frontpage.

Thanks advance for your pointing me in the right direction.

kevin

Not sure this is in the right forum ???

That site looks like one big image map to me. Can you highlight any of the text on that site?

hey kevin-

nice looking site you have there

i too hate frontpage with a passion but there are some things that just shouldnt be hand coded.

i think this is one of those siuations...try another search through here on creating webpages with image ready

basically you take an image like you have and slice it up in image ready, set up all the links in there also then save optimized as HTML and Images...it ll write all the code for you and set up tables...and since you did say you were going to try to avoid them...(not sure why? tabels are a good method for this but..) i belive you can set it to write CSS instead which would be the next best thing...you have to have some kind of structure underneath that...

i suppose an image map would work which you could also do that in image ready to save you sanity without trying to figure out the x y cooordinates etc, but i stil think that the table structure is your best bet

good lucky and rock on!!

re:image ready?

atucally, the site at the link is not one of my own design. I am trying to figure out how it was done. But thanks for the tip on image ready.
