Question transparent in photoshop

i'm using photoshop 7 and i wanted to create a transparent gif, i've already read some tutorials on how to make a transparent gif that will adjust to its background (just like any transparent pics would do) . all tutorials that i've seen uses this GIF89, what is that GIF89? and are there any other way to make a transparent pic without using GIF89?

I'm going to let everyone in this forum know that I have no clue wut a gif89 is. It just sounds like a gif that was introduced in 1989 :P

As for your transparent gif, try going to this thread, we managed to explain how to create a transparent image in many ways.

gif89 is a version of the gif specification. There's also gif87 and gif89a. I believe gif87 doesn't support transparency and gif89a is the only one that supports animation.

When you save a .gif file in Photoshop it should prompt you for which spec you want to use. If it doesn't prompt you, don't worry about it. The easiest way to get a .gif from Photoshop is probably the "Export for Web" feature.
