Trouble fading an image from grey to black

Hi all,

Been working with PS 7 for a while now and I am just beggining to understand how powerful it is. That being said I have hit a brick wall...

I have some black and white art work that I scanned in and have as jpegs. What I want to do is take one of these images and put it in a banner on one side, then have it slowly fade to black on the other side.

My problem is no matter what I try, I can always see the square outline of the image. I thought what I needed to use was Feathering, but that has gotten me nowhere.

I hope this makes sense, I can post a link to an example if needed but I am hoping one of you pros. understands what I am trying to do

Right you are Here goes, hopefully this will help to understand what I am going for:

I would apply the "Color Burn" blending mode on your right pic, and then feather out the darker sections so that there are no lines left to define the outer edge of the box.

True, it does darken the pic a bit because it takes the white out, but see what you think.

(PS6) At the top of your layers palette, there's a drop down menu. Right now it should say "Normal", that's the blending mode you have right now on your layer. Click on that, and in there you'll find Color Burn.

I found it, but its greyed out I tried all of the different options, nothing is even close to what I am trying to achieve. I have gone through lots of tutorials and a lot of them use the gradient tool, but even with that I still have that sharp outline of the image.

Isn't there a way to cut the image out of the square border and somehow fuzz up the edges so they are not at obvious right angles?

Hmmm, are you sure you have the layer selected and not a layer mask or something else?

What version of ps do you have?

check what mode you are in (under Image - Image MOde) make sure it says RGB! also check that you are working on a valid layer and not a background layer or something

I'd use a layer mask then I's make the image fade out over a layer with a gradient on it.

I did it quickly (excuse me if it doesnt look perfect) and it came with something not that bad actually.
I dont know if it is what you are looking for, but I hope it helps.

I tried my hand at it as well. All I did was airbrush eraser the edges of it, then used a gradient to fade it in.
I also cleaned up the edges around the guy. The area around his mouth is a little phucked up though lol. Oh well I suck lol The rest of it looks good though
