select a color of an image as bgcolor and make it transparent?

    hi!

i have a picture, a fire with a black background. is it somehow possible to change the black to transparency, so that photoshop automatically makes the darker parts of the pic more transparent than the lighter ones?
because i would like to place the fire on another background, but with only cutting it out it looks very bad...

    thx for help! j0sh

    yes.

    with your image open...
    1. CTRL + A - selects entire image
    2. CTRL + C - copies your entire image
    3. CTRL + N - opens new canvas automatically sized to that of the image on the clipboard (make sure to check off transparency in the new window dialog)
    4. CTRL + V - paste coped image into new window

now using the magic wand you can select the black and the simply press delete...the selected area will disappear!

save...as a GIF...gifs are the most common image file that support transparency (jpgs do not)

also cutting it with a selection tool may be hepful depending on the image...

i know you said that cutting it makes it look bad but have you tried using feathering? it will kinda blend it in and make it not look so straight edged

    hope this helps!!

    good lucky and ROCK ON!!

I used magic eraser and got rid of the darker colour around the edges. Then press CTRL and click on your image in the layers pallette to select the fire.
    Go to Selection>Feather>25
Then copy it and paste it to whatever background you want
You dont have to use 25, try out diff numbers and see how you like it.
Maybe someone has a better suggestion. But I tried it and it looked pretty good.
(The feathering wont show up until you move or paste the selection)

there seems to be like a border line between the fire & yr yellow background. you could use the Smudge tool, moving slightly from inwards going outwards to the background (to get remove the border thingy)
    Hope this helps.
