    Illustrator 10 - line fade

With Illustrator 10, I need to fade a colored line.

I can create a thin line via a small rectangle, but the gradient is always grey/black.

How can you color the line and fade it without layers - because this corrupts the colors.

This is very complicated for something so simple. I don't even have the options they describe under "appearance" tab - maybe they are into a later version. But thanks
