I urgently need a good chat script that stands for about 500 users.

As far as I know, problem of suchlike large number of users is that each will require at least one streaming connection. This means, if you are serving 500 clients simultaneously chat script will occupy about 750 MB of RAM - 1.5MB / HTTPD processes (for PHP module).

    Thanks!

Your best bet is to find a Java servlet somewhere and use that instead of PHP.
