create maps with php

I'm building a weather web site and want to generate weather maps with php.

I just created a database with temps, max, mins, etc.. (easier than I thought, this php stuff is great).

Now I want to extract that data and plot them on a map (plot a few cities with their temp and weather icon (.gif file))

Can this be done?
