How does one go about debugging PHP?

How does one go about debugging PHP?

I have an open source CMS php web site. The template / theme that I have has some issues. I have tried looking online for a solution along the expected and typical paths but they have reached a dead end.

So I have decided to do it the hard way and actually get into the code and find the error

Any suggestions on how I should begin?

    Hi,

this is pretty vague. What issues? Actual PHP errors? Broken HTML? Unexpected behaviour?

For general PHP debugging, there's Xdebug. And of course there's the good old var_dump(). But it all depends on the concrete issue.

Why cant I use certain words like "drop" as part of my Security Question answers?
There are certain words used by hackers to try to gain access to systems and manipulate data; therefore, the following words are restricted: "select," "delete," "update," "insert," "drop" and "null".
