Is there a way that I can grab headlines from top (news) sites on the net, such as Slashdot, freshmeat, BBC news, etc, in the same way that Slashdot does using only PHP and HTML? I'm not sure what exactly the protocal behind these things is, or what it is called, but I've got a feeling its a Netscape thing.

Huh ... a fresh problem ...

the solution is simple but with "big" amount of work.

1. You need to write a simple "browser" in php, that would have the ability to store a given webpage. (Source can easily found)

2. You must write a filter for the page. This step is easy, cause they use templates to build their sites.

3. After you grab the information show it to your customers!

Ummm... is this really the only/best way of doing it. I was sure that there is a better and easier way... okay I'm probably being lazy, but then I am by nature. Slashdot do it for loads of sites, they must have a better way of doing it...?

they use mod_perl though, I saw an article on it somewhere. I think it was here. Seach devshed for "user customization".
